  • You rose to fame with your ¡®Mirroring¡¯ and the ¡®Li Wei falls...¡¯ series. How does it feel when such hard work starts paying dividend?

I¡¯m very happy that my works become popular and people love these works of course, but fame is not the factor I care about too much. All I¡¯m thinking is how to do great works.

  • From oil paintings to now photographing, why this transformation?

I started my career as a performance artist, and got big influence from East Village artists, such like Zhang Huan. You can see from my works that the performance element is clear. At the early age, photography is only a way of recording the performance procedure. Gradually, I use photography to express. This is not the only way, I also do sculpture.

  • Many of your photographs have a hidden layered meaning. What do you convey - is it usually a transformation you seek in the world around or is it a vent for anger towards societal issues?

I think I¡¯m trying to express the real world surrounds us. That¡¯s why I lifted myself high, to experience the real, though the result is ¡°to make the impossible possible.¡± Yes, the social issue is what I care, I shot in construction sites, in rural places¡ that¡¯s what I want to show how fast the economy developed in China and at the same time how dangerous and unstable it is.

  • You have caught the world¡¯s attention now. What do you plan to use this for?

To make more and more great works.

  • So, what is it that you want to be considered as - a photographer or as a performance artist?

Whatever, I treat myself as an artist.

  • Do you rely on software to achieve the illusion or do you achieve the entire effects using only props? Explain our readers in length on how you achieved a particular image and the desired effect

I use the crane to lift myself in high places, and then use photoshop to remove the wire at my back.

  • The element of danger is very noticeable in your images. What makes you take that extra inch and aren¡¯t you ever scared?

I was scared before, and also some shooting is extremely dangerous. But that¡¯s what I hope to get from my real experience- this is the most important part of my work. Danger is a symbol of how we live in the world now.

  • Your works have been displayed and appreciated all over the world. How does it feel when people of all walks and parts of life appreciate your creations? Could you tell us about one amusing incident that happened in a different country?

People love my work. And they feel unbelievable, sometimes they feel humorous.  I¡¯m happy that people love my works.

  • Could you please explain our readers the work flow of your photography.

I have an idea of what to shoot, then shoot in real places, I have a technical crew who will help rent the crane and use the cable to lift me high. i¡¯ll also find models sometimes. Then I¡¯ll do post-production, to use photoshop to remove the wire at my back.

  • How long does it take for your images to take a final shape after they are conceptualized? Tell us about it, do people say it¡¯s impossible to achieve considering you "make everything impossible possible."

Several hours for shooting.
